Bailey, Hornets cruise past Spartans

Sam Bailey scored 24 service points and pitched in with four kills and four blocks to lead Kirtland to a 3-0 sweep of Richmond Heights on Thursday.

The Hornets won 25-17, 25-10, 25-17 to improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division.

“The team played well tonight,” said Kirtland coach Bob Schenosky. “Total team effort. Nothing hit the ground. I was proud of what they brought against a much improved Richmond Heights team.”

Emily Nerderman contributed with 17 service points and 11 assists and Olivia Mancisio hammered home 12 kills and had eight blocks in the win.

But, it was Bailey who sparked the Hornets.

“Sam has emerged as a leader and all-around solid player,” Schenosky said. “She served aggressively and moved the ball around well. I'm proud to call her a team captain.”

Bailey credited the rest of the Hornets for her success.

“My teammates played some great defense to keep the serve on our side,” she said. “I have been working on getting my serve to drop more and it's nice being able to rely on my teammates to play great defense.”

Kirtland travels to Brush on Saturday then closes out the regular season with a home game against Fairport Harding on Tuesday and a road game at Berkshire on Thursday.
