Beachwood shuts down Cardinal

Sophomore Shai Yulish continued his assault on the net in Beachwood’s 6-0 win over visiting Cardinal on Tuesday.

Bogatur Askaryan scored a goal for the Bison

Yulish scored three goals and added an assist and Max Babbush, Asaf Roth and Bogatur Askaryan also scored for the Bison, who improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference.

The goals pushed Yulish’s season total to 14.

“It’s from the hard work from all the guys on the team,” said Beachwood coach Brian Greene. “Not to take anything away from Shai, he’s scoring the goals, but the guys in the midfield are doing a lot of work for Shai to finish it off. All the guys are very unselfish. They just want to go out there and win and score goals. They don’t care if they’re the guy who scores it or the guy who passes it.”

All six of Beachwood’s goals were scored in the first half, which allowed the Bison to focus on other aspects of the game in the second half.

“The boys got a chance to play with some possession,” Greene said. “(The Huskies), they don’t give up. They were playing hard the whole game. We just spread the ball around.”

The shutout was the third for the Bison and the second for Beachwood keeper Griffin Davis, who had one save.

“(Davis) is having a nice year,” Greene said. “He’s been doing really well organizing the back. He’s a good goal keeper. He takes care of what he’s supposed to take care of and when he’s older he’ll do more than that. This is his first year as varsity keeper and he’s been doing real well growing as a keeper.”

Evan List recorded 11 saves for Cardinal.

The Bison travel to Orange on Thursday for a rivalry game with the Lions.

“We just have to keep playing well and grow as a team; not play at our opponent’s level,” Greene said. “Our goal for this team is to reach a plateau going into the playoffs and have the team playing at a high level no matter who we play. The sign of a young team is a team that plays at its opponents’ level. We’re making big strides because when we started the season we just played at our opponent’s level. I’m starting to see and the boys are showing me they are starting to get it. They need to do the same things no matter who they’re playing.”

Cardinal is at Berkshire on Tuesday.
