Independence’s girls’ soccer team finally broke into the win column with a 2-0 win over visiting Brooklyn on Monday.
The Blue Devils opened the season with four losses—including a 1-0 setback—and three ties. They have allowed just one goal in their last three games but couldn’t finish off an opponent until Julia Gutermuth netted two goals and the Independence defense kept the Hurricanes out of the net.
“I truly have been getting tired of ties,” Gutermuth said. “It feels like such a relief to finally win because we should've won at least two or three games before this.”
Independence, which improved to 1-4-3, has now recorded two straight shutouts.
“The defense is playing really well,” said Independence coach Bryan Less. “I told the girls it’s not just the defense and goalie getting the shutout. We’re getting a lot of possession and whenever we have the ball the other team can’t score, so it’s an all-around effort.”
Gutermuth credited her teammates for their efforts in winning those free balls, maintaining possession and distributing the ball.
“We don't always string together the passes we need and don't always work the best as a team, but tonight we all just seemed to know where one another were and were talking very well,” she said. “I just hope we work as well these next few games as we did tonight.”
Krista DeFini recorded seven saves in the win.
Independence hosts Berkshire on Thursday. The Badgers improved to 5-2 overall with a 14-0 win over Fuchs Mizrachi on Monday.
