Independence’s Christian Seif, Jared McCullough and Wyatt Kunevicius each scored a goal to lead Independence to a 3-0 win over visiting Wellington on the Alumni Field turf at Stan Skoczen Stadium on Saturday.
The win was Independence’s 13th in its last 15 games and the Blue Devils haven’t lost since a season-opening 2-1 setback to Medina Highland in their first game of the season.
“We performed well,” Seif said. "We could have played better. There were some areas, defensively they had chances on breaks. Overall, we played a decent game and eventually we will end up playing them in the playoffs, so we got to bring it.”
Seif opened the scoring in the first half followed by McCullough and Kunevicius to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead at halftime. The Blue Devils several scoring chances in the second half but Wellington’s defense held.
“I think we could have a few more opportunities to score,” said Independence coach Ryan MacRaild. “A couple turnovers in the final third of the field, a couple give aways that we could have found the back of the net with, but overall we did enough to win. We have a week off until our next game on Saturday. It’s nice to have a tune up before playoffs.”
Independence closed out the regular season with a 13-1-2 record. The Blue Devils earned the No. 2 seed in the Division III Elyria District and open the postseason at home on Oc. 22 against the winner of No. 8 Lake Ridge Academy and No. 9 Horizon Science Academy.
