Blue Devils make quick work of Eagles

After opening the season with a loss, the Independence volleyball team has now won seven straight heading into Saturday’s Rene Roche Invitational.

The Blue Devils improved to 7-1 overall and 7-0 in league play with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-13 sweep over host Geneva on Thursday.

“The girls did a great job of bringing a lot of energy to the floor and focus,” said Independence head coach Megan Osysko.

Independence recorded 12 service aces in the match.

“A lot of our success so far is attributed to our serving,” Osysko said. “A lot of teams can’t return a lot of our serves or we get them out of system right away and we’re able to volley back and forth with them.”

Maura Collins and Lexi Prokopius both led the team with four aces while Mallory Trombetta and Emily Magas each had two.

Collins also recorded 12 kills and 10 digs in the match.

“Maura did a great job with 12 kills and four aces,” Osysko said. “She had a good run and Emily Magas and Lexi had good serving runs. We’re able to put a team away a couple points at a time. They more score one or two and then we get it back and score a few more points. Those smaller runs that we have are kind of helping us out.”

Magas was second on the team with five kills and Prokopius and Katie May both had four. Trombetta posted a team-high 17 digs and Hallie Zumack led the Blue Devils with 19 assists.
