Blue Devils show well at North Coast Classic

After a strong showing at the 2016 Hawken Invitational Tournament a week ago the Independence wrestling team returned to action on Friday and Saturday as the Blue Devils hosted the 2016 North Coast Classic.

Juniors Nick Mroczynski and Josh Stasek and senior Kevin Clymer all placed among the top eight in their respective weight classes and several other Independence wrestlers fared well.

“I was impressed,” said Independence coach Ken DeAngelis. “Kids I thought would do well really stepped up and wrestled well. Clymer, Mroczynski and Stasek all made it into the top pool and wrestled really, really well. Some of the younger guys, what I really look for is how do they wrestle on Saturday afternoon after they’ve had seven tough matches and each one did really good job of battling.”

Mroczynski placed sixth at 170 pounds.

He finished pool wrestling with a 5-0 record, which included four pins and a major decision, then dropped a 7-0 decision to eventual champion Alec Shaw of Greensburg Salem. He then fell to Solon’s Jason Garcia, 6-4 in overtime and defaulted in the fifth place match due to an eye injury.

“He ran into the kid from Greensburg Salem in the semis,” DeAngelis said. “He was a special kid who won the whole tournament. We had trouble stopping his single (leg takedown). He scored on us a couple times with that. Coming back, we lost an overtime match to a Solon kid. We have to learn how to win that match, but we’re right there.”

Clymer finished seventh at 160 pounds after finishing pool wrestling with a 5-1 record. He recorded one pin, two technical falls and two major decisions before earning a spot in the third place bracket.

“He lost to Perry’s Sam Cales in pool wrestling,” DeAngelis said. “We lost to him before so we knew he was tough. (Clymer) is just a very smart wrestler and he looked really good, he just ran into a couple kids who were better than him this weekend.”

Clymer dropped a 10-6 decision in the consolation round but rebounded with his third pin of the tournament in the seventh place match.

Stasek was 3-1 in pool wrestling with a pair of pins and an 8-4 loss to eventual champion Jon Saville of Brunswick. He dropped a 5-1 decision in the consolation semifinals and finished with a pin for seventh place.

“He wrestled really, really well,” DeAngelis said. “He beat a kid from North Royalton on Friday that was a really big kid and lost a heartbreaker to wrestle for third and fourth. He was winning 1-0 with 15 seconds left then got dinged for stalling to tie the match. The kid escaped to win. He was right there in that match. To his credit he came back and pinned a tough kid from Normandy to finish seventh.”

Chagrin Falls’ Jack Dawson finished second at 285. Stasek pinned Dawson at Hawken a week ago.

Liam Walker (113), David Goldwin (113), Michael Kucera (120), Luke Swauger (126), Jimmy Senick (132), Nick Rossi (145), Luke Clymer (182) and Charlie Starling (285) also competed for the Blue Devils.

Kucera was 3-3 with two pins, Rossi finished 3-2 with a pair of pins and Walker, Goldwin, Senick and Starling all won a match in the tournament.

“I thought Luke Clymer, Kucera, Goldwin and Walker did a great job wrestling to the very end,” DeAngelis said. “It really wasn’t about winning and losing with them, it was more of a character thing, getting better and making sure they were staying tough.”

Rossi finished third in the 145-pound B bracket, good for 11th place overall.

“He did a really nice job overall,” DeAngelis said. “Kucera, Senick and Luke Clymer, they all just grinded it out this weekend and wrestled well. We have a lot of growing to do in this next month or so but you can’t learn until you get into those situations. We just have to learn and grow and get better to be ready for the end of the season.”

Area champions included Mentor's Parker Brunkala (120) and Christian Marinozzi (145) and Perry's Evan Schenk (182).

Local placewinners included Chagrin Falls’ Justin Rayner (sixth at 132), Spencer Fleming (eighth at 182) and Jack Dawson (second at 285); Hawken’s JP Hlifka (fifth at 113); Mentor’s Nick Sabin (fourth at 106), Hunter Davenport (seventh at 113), Nate DeBoe (fourth at 126), Connor DeBoe (second at 132), Dominic Shelley (sixth at 182) and Brian Ross (sixth at 285); Mayfield’s Rory Nolan (eighth at 138), Josh Appling (sixth at 160) and Billy Fleming (fourth at 170); Orange’s Nick Began (second at 113) and Julian Patterson (seventh at 152); and Perry’s Kyle Rowan (third at 106), Zach Bubonic (seventh at 126), Sam Cales (fifth at 160) and Billy Hedrich (eighth at 170).

Independence travels to Berkshire on Thursday for a Chagrin Valley Conference meet against the Badgers and Kirtland.
