Cardinal clinches share of third straight CVC title

An early season loss to rival Berkshire left the Cardinal Huskies in a precarious situation.

Another league loss and the Huskies would likely see their streak of Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division titles snapped at two.

Led by seniors Caitlyn Lechene and Haley Adams and a host of underclassmen, the Huskies went on to win nine straight league matches to earn a share of the title with the Badgers.

“It's been amazing to be a part of such a successful and talented program,” Lechene said. “Going into high school I would have never imagined winning a CVC title, let alone three championships in a row.”

Thursday’s 3-0 win at Cuyahoga Heights sealed the Huskies’ fate. They dominated the Redskins, 25-17, 25-15, 25-10 to improve to 18-4 overall and 13-1 in league play.

Maddie Bean led the Huskies with 31 assists and also had three kills. Lechene posted a team-high 14 kills and also had 20 digs and four aces. Megan Zeigler pitched in with 22 digs. Jordyn Schultz recorded seven kills and 20 digs and Adams had four blocks and three aces.

Cardinal earned the sixth seed in the Division III Leavittsburg District Tournament and will open the postseason on Tuesday against No. 9 Pymatuning Valley at LaBrae High School.

“I am very proud of how far our team has come this year and it wouldn't have been possible if we didn't work together as a team,” Lechene said. “We definitely have momentum going into the post-season and we are looking forward to the next couple of weeks.”
