Villa Angela-St. Joseph Athletic Director Nate Zavorek proudly introduced to a crowd of parents, teachers, administration, teammates and friends four Vikings who signed their letters of intent for football scholarships on Feb. 4 in the library of the high school.
Tre’Von Williams-Scruggs will continue his career at Youngstown State University. Marvell Ross, Brandon Green and Tremayne Harvell will play at Notre Dame College.
VASJ coach John Storey spoke glowingly of the four Vikings who were 1-9 as sophomores, and helped lead the team to a pair of playoff appearances and 17 wins over the last two season.
Williams-Scruggs played quarterback at VASJ, but was recruited as a defensive back and an athlete by the Penguins. Ross – a finalist for the 2013 Tony Fisher Award – is a record-setting running back and an All-Ohioan. Green and Harvell are outstanding athletes who expect to contribute immediately at NDC.
Each Viking standout talked about their time at VASJ as a chance to prep for the next level and put a stamp on the program at East 185th and Lakeshore Boulevard.
“This is a great feeling and I look at my family and can say I was one of the ones can go to college and move forward,” Williams-Scruggs said.
Ross eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in his junior and senior season and is looking forward to taking his skills to the next level.
“I can’t wait to see how I can do at the college level, knowing I can do it and hopefully prove people wrong who said I couldn’t do it,” Ross said. “You can never do anything alone, and it takes a lot of people to get it done.”
Green – a versatile defensive back and wide receiver – is excited about moving on to college football with his high school teammates.
“Me and my brothers wanted to stay together and I can’t wait to get there,” Green said. “I am going to do my best.”
Harvell, a talented defensive back, is excited to get the chance to prove himself beyond the high school field.
“I got real close with all these guys and now it is time for all of us to go on and go somewhere we can all do our best and do what we do,” Harvell said.
