Hornets spread the wealth in win at Fairport

Kirtland continued its march to a Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division championship with a 59-16 win at Fairport Harding on Wednesday.

Junior Sydney Snyder led the Hornets with a game-high 24 points and also tied her sister Lauren Snyder with a team-best six steals.

The Hornets improved to 13-2 overall and 9-0 in league play heading into the final month of the regular season.

“All of our hard work has really paid off so far this season,” Snyder said. “We are right where we want to be. If we keep up our intensity and positive attitude we should be ready for a good postseason.”

Kirtland jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead and extended its advantage to 29-6 at halftime.

Head coach Bob Bell emptied the bench and seven out of the 10 Hornets who played found their way into the scoring column.

“I thought we spread the ball around,” Bell said. “The scoring was spread around pretty evenly and they did a good job defensively.”

Junior Jenna Sayle contributed with 13 points for the Hornets. Lauren Lutz pitched in with four points and Rylee McCrory and Julia Camino finished with three and two, respectively. Haleigh Getchell scored the first four points of her varsity career in the second half.

“Fairport put up a tough zone, forcing us to move the ball a lot on offense,” Sayle said. “Our team focused on passing to break and find high percentage shots in this zone. Sydney and Lauren made many great tips and steals to break away while Lauren and Rylee worked hard rebounding and getting open on the inside.”

Lutz posted a team-high seven rebounds as she continues to fine tune her inside game.

“She is really coming around as an inside player,” Bell said. “She is consistently rebounding well for us every game and she plays good defense. Her offense is getting better all the time. She's got a couple things she's ironing out, but she's just a sophomore.”

Kirtland travels to Cardinal on Saturday.
