Four different players scored goals to lead Kirtland to a 5-1 non-conference win over visiting Columbia on Monday.
Sanjay Sundararajan scored two and Kyle Work, Ryan Friedenberg and Jared Ianiro each had one goal for the Hornets, who improved to 9-3-1 overall.
“Total team effort,” said Kirtland coach John Valentic. “Everyone got in and played significant minutes. I’m happy with how we moved the ball and played unselfishly.”
Danny Jahnke had four saves in goal.
“I can't give enough credit to the back four that play in front of me, Kyle Work, Sam Coso, Bartul Petric and Caleb Cardon,” Jahnke said. “Without them, I am nothing. Our defense has really jelled together and we're playing outstanding lately. We're playing with passion and purpose. They make my job easy, only having to make one to two saves a game.”
Jahnke also had an assist, a rare feat for a goalie.
“What happened is that I was playing really high off my line, and they played a through ball and I ran and just cleared it,” Jahnke said. “I kicked it as far as I could. It landed right at Ryan's feet, and he put it away like he always does. That was pretty cool to say the least.”
Ante Bevanda, Ianiro and Friedenberg also had assists in the win.
Kirtland travels to Cardinal on Tuesday.
