Cardinal’s boys’ golf team closed out the 2016 season with a 457 at the Division II sectional tournament at Quail Hollow Golf Course on Monday.
The Huskies showed continuous improvement throughout the season but struggled playing in the difficult conditions presented by the wind and the rain.
“That’s about equal to what the conditions were for our team,” said Cardinal coach Glenn Travers. “They haven’t played in this kind of stuff ever, as far as I know, not last year in JV and not this year. The rains were heavy at times and it was hard to see and the wind was blowing right in your face.”
Jonathon Heredos led the Huskies with a 107 while Anthony Sinito fired a 109, Kevin Hammitt closed out with a 121, Mitchell Samas carded a 130 and Daniel Heredos came in with a 141.
“Anthony really stepped up this year,” Travers said. “Daniel wasn’t really happy. The conditions were getting to him. He couldn’t pull anything up on the fairway.”
While their score was a bit higher than the team would have liked, the Huskies are eager to return in 2017.
“For these guys to be able to compete in those kinds of conditions on this challenging of a course, I have nothing but good things to say about all of them,” Travers said. “The kids are really excited about coming back next year. There is some talk of getting something going for an indoor swing center at the school to work on their swings and some other things they need to work on.”
Junior Virginia Travers, who played with the boys’ team throughout the regular season, will play in the Division II girls sectional tournament on Tuesday at Punderson.
