If Friday’s 65-29 win at Bristol is an indication of things to come, the Cardinal girls basketball team is in for some exciting moments.
The offensive output was the most scored by any current member of the Huskies’ team and topped the 60 points the Huskies scored in a win over Fairport Harding on Jan. 18, 2014 when the current Cardinal seniors were sophomores.
“I’m definitely encouraged by the way we started the season off,” said Cardinal coach Luke Kruse. “We scored a ton of points. I’m not sure the last time a Cardinal girls team put up 64 points.”
Four Huskies scored in double figures and eight players found the basket in the win.
“It was really unselfish,” Kruse said. “I’m really encouraged by the girls giving up maybe a contested jump shot to look for the open person who had a better look. We definitely had a lot of assists. The assists are really what paved the way for a good offense.”
Delaney Leichtman led the Huskies with 14 points after spending much of last season on the injured list.
“I've been working hard this season and trying not to let my injuries slow me down,” she said. “I was told in the beginning of the week I was in the starting five. It's a great pleasure being able to play on a team that actually plays like a team. We're one unit this year and it feels great.”
Ashley Gubanyar pitched in with 12 points while Haley Adams scored 11 and Maggie Clark finished with 10. Emily Kruse and Alissa Nevison both contributed six points and Camille Cummins and Kathryn Dhayer had four and two, respectively.
“Ashley, a freshman, came right in and had a really nice start to her career,” Kruse said. “Haley was steady as always. Kathryn played good defense and Emily contributed with six points and played good defense. Camille Cummins did really well in her first varsity action with a couple baskets. It was a total team effort.”
Cardinal hosts Newbury on Tuesday.
