Huskies shoot season low against rival

Cardinal’s young golf team has a lot to look forward to in the future, especially after closing out the league portion of its schedule with a season-low score.

The Huskies dropped a 173-201 decision to rival Berkshire on Wednesday but left the course feeling good about finishing one stroke above their goal for the season.

“We shot best round of season as a team,” said Cardinal coach Glenn Travers. “I’m a little disappointed with the scores but collectively we shot a 201. We had set a goal the past week or so to break 200 as a team and we came real close. I’m happy with that. I think the kids are happy that. They’d have liked to go to 199 but we came pretty close. I’m okay with that.”

Virginia Travers led the Huskies with a 47 after opening the match on pace to set a career low score.

“She’s getting there,” Coach Travers said. “She started out 1-over after four halls. She was striking the ball well but it’s those pressure situations that you have to deal with (in golf) and until you face those situations it’s tough mentally. A person isn’t going to go from 50 to 36 overnight. You have a blowup hole because you lost concentration and the next time you’re in that situation you don’t let that bother you. Those are uncharted territories for these golfers but they have to get through them in order to grow. She had an 8 on a par 4 but came right back and brought it all back together again.”

Kevin Hammitt shot 50, Daniel Heredos carded a 51 and Jonathan Heredos finished with a 53 for the Huskies.

“Kevin came on strong,” Travers said. “Daniel has been struggling as of late. For him to come in with a 51, compared to the scores he had the past couple of weeks, was big to help us get down to a season-best 201.”

Anthony Sinito didn’t score for the Huskies but his scores continue to come down.

“He came through for us compared to where he was at the beginning of the season,” Travers said. “He’s teetering on averaging in the low 50s, which is good for him.”

Now the Huskies have 12 days to prepare for the Chagrin Valley Conference tournament. That break will give them plenty of time to work on the fundamentals but Travers has to find a way to keep the team focused for the postseason.

“I have to keep the kids sharp,” he said. “I’ll throw together some scrambles and other pressure situations. We may just play each other for the next couple of weeks to keep their game sharp and get ready for the CVC.”
