Independence’s Mroczynski goes back-to-back at HIT

GATES MILLS-A third period penalty point gave Independence junior Nick Mroczynski a 1-0 win over Benedictine’s Max Martin in the 170-pound championship match at the 2016 Hawken Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

The HIT title was the second straight for Mroczynski.

“It feels good,” he said about the tournament win. “It starts off the season right. I just want to continue my success.”

Mroczynski opened the tournament on Friday with an 11-2 major decision over Western Reserve Academy senior Nels Lund and 1 minute, 58 second pin of Wickliffe freshman Avery Ritz to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Teammate Kevin Clymer, a senior, defaulted to Mroczynski in the semifinals to set up Saturday evening’s showdown with Martin in the championship bout.

Neither Mroczynski nor Martin scored in the first period and Mroczynski held Martin in the bottom position for all two minutes of the second period.

Mroczynski was awarded a penalty point midway through the third when Martin locked his hands in an effort to keep Mroczynski from escaping.

“I like to score a little bit more in the finals but other than that I was pretty satisfied with the way I wrestled,” Mroczynski said. “I was just a little frustrated because I wasn't able to get out. I tried to keep my cool so I wouldn't get points taken away from me or anything.”

Other HIT champions included Brecksville’s Jack Stanley (106), Hawken’s JP Hlifka (113), Benedictine’s Derek Berdysz (120) and Joe Marrone (145), Chagrin Falls’ Justin Rayner (126) and Spencer Fleming (182), Pymatuning Valley’s Noah Campbell (132) and Gaige Willis (220), Western Reserve Academy’s Sam Toggas (138), Newbury’s Alex Lampert (152) and Thomas McKale (195) and Warrensville’s Anthony Scurry (160).
