Independence sends five swimmers and six relays to districts

Several of Independence’s swimmers extended their seasons with strong performances at Saturday’s Division II sectional meet at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.

Jacob Laski, Sam Meyer, Amanda Pucella, Ashley Rega and Ellie Clymer all qualified as individuals for next weekend’s District Meet at Cleveland State University and all six of the Blue Devils’ relay teams also advanced.

Laski and Pucella qualified in diving while Pucella also advanced in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Rega qualified in both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly while Clymer punched her district ticket in the 100 yard breaststroke. Meyer advanced in the 100 yard butterfly.

Independence’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Clymer, Rega, Marissa Artrip and Holly Stralka is seeded 16th at districts. The 200 yard medley team of Clymer, Rega, Artrip and Miranda Gibson is seeded 15th while the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Artrip, Gibson, Kiley Duhn and Claire Jares is seeded 19th.

All three boys’ relay teams also will compete at Cleveland State.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Meyer, Nick Turkovic, Shane Bender and Kevin Merwhinney is seeded 15th, the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Meyer, Mewhinney, Steve Stokar and Brandon Stralka is seeded 19th and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Stokar, Meyer, Mewhinney and Colin Jedrezek is seeded 17th.

District diving competition begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday while swimming begins on Friday.
