Independence’s young volleyball team passed its first test with flying colors.
The Blue Devils swept visiting Geneva, 3-0, on Thursday to finish undefeated after the first round of conference play.
“For a young and restless team, we are doing our job to get better each day we step on the court,” said Independence coach Megan Osysko. “We are looking forward to some out of conference play this weekend and into the upcoming weeks.”
Independence cruised to 25-19, 25-14 and 25-21 wins over the Eagles to improve to 7-0 overall and 7-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division.
Junior Maura Collins led the Blue Devils with 11 kills, four aces and also contributed with 10 digs. Freshman Maddy Bilinovic posted a team high 25 digs. Freshman Katie Thompson added 10 digs.
“Maddy Bilinovic played outstanding defense,” Osysko said. “She was all over the court covering the hitters and stepping in wherever she was needed so the ball wouldn't hit the floor on our side. Katie Thompson also has been playing great defense for us and scoring points with her aggressive serving. They both do a nice job of complementing Maura in the back row."
Despite her youth, Bilinovic approaches each game with confidence.
“I know I'm young but my teammates and coaches count on me to help the team succeed,” she said. “It doesn't matter how old any of us are, when we step on the court nothing else matters except playing our hardest and giving all that we have.”
Sophomore Sarah Piteo led the team with 26 assists.
