Kirtland holds off Riverside

PAINESVILLE—Kirtland overcame a 10-point first half deficit and a late Riverside surge to pull out a 42-39 non-conference win at the Riverside Field House on Monday.

The Hornets hit 5 of 8 free throws in the closing minutes to hold off the Beavers.

“It means a lot,” said Kirtland coach Bob Bell of his team’s ability to overcome a double digit deficit and make clutch plays to keep a lead in the closing minutes. “It just kind of shows our kids have the grit to hang in there. They could have folded the tent early in the game but they didn't. They just kept battling away and battling away and that's really what it's all about.”

Kirtland junior Sydney Snyder found herself in early foul trouble and Riverside’s Brittney Prugel took advantage.

With Snyder on the bench, the Hornets were forced into a zone defense. That gave Prugel the room she’d need to hit on 4 of 6 3-point tries in the second quarter that helped the Beavers turn a 10-8 first quarter deficit into a 22-12 late in the first half.

“We were trying to go a little bit of zone press and drop into a trapping 2-3 and that just opened up the door for her to knock them down and she took advantage of it,” Bell said. “She's an incredibly good shooter. We learned our lesson. We had to get out of that and go into a man-to-man.”

Prugel scored just three of her team-high 15 points in the second half.

“They were definitely hitting their shots,” said Kirtland junior Jenna Sayle, who finished with 11 points, six rebounds, a block and a steal. “They were doing a great job on threes. We stuck to a man defense to get out on the shot better so they wouldn't have as good of a shot.”

Snyder’s return helped the Hornets climb back into the game.

She scored five of her game-high 17 points in the closing minutes of the first half to close Riverside’s lead to 24-23 at the break.

Snyder finished the game with a game-high 13 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

“It affected us in the first half when she was in foul trouble, but Syd's a smart player,” Bell said. “She made sure she went out and played defense with her feet the way it should be played, hands straight up on every shot and did a good job.”

Lauren Snyder chipped in with six points and two steals for the Hornets while Katie McCollister scored four and Lauren Lutz and Lauren Bottesch both finished with two points.

McCollister had three steals and Bottesch pulled down three rebounds and had a blocked shot.

“I can’t' say enough about Katie for the defensive job she did. She was just incredible tonight,” Bell said. “Jenna Sayle played great defense. She plays hard. Lauren Bottesch did a really nice job. She had a nice ball game. She changed the game a little bit inside. She did a really nice job. Lauren Snyder did a really nice job with eight points. She was our third leading scorer. She played good defense as well.”

Amanda Apanavicius contributed with seven points for Riverside. Olivia Parsons finished with five and Gianna Fiore and Lauryn Holm both scored four for the Beavers. Marissa Rodriguez and Holm both pulled down six rebounds.

Kirtland improved to 4-0 on the year while Riverside dropped to 1-3. The Hornets host Cardinal on Wednesday while the Beavers host North.
