Kirtland sophomore Tyler McCrory allowed just four hits and struck out nine in the Hornets’ 8-0 win over visiting Harvey on Wednesday.
“Tyler pitched great,” said Kirtland coach Luke Smrdel. “He controlled the entire game by getting ahead and mixing up his pitches.”
The Hornets were equally as dominant on offense in racking up 14 hits.
Senior Joey Bates was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and senior David Allchin and sophomore Mike Zeuli both were 3-for-4.
“Mike Zeuli is absolutely killing the ball right now. He's gotten nine hits in the last three games and multiple clutch hits for us,” Smrdel said. “David and Joey had fantastic days at the plate. They both showed their speed off a bit today, combining for five stolen bases as well.”
Junior Palmer Capretta had two hits and two runs batted in for the Hornets and senior Anthony Fortuna and junior Ben Stark both had hits. Zeuli, Stark and Capretta all had doubles.
Kirtland improved to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division. The Hornets are scheduled to host league leader Berkshire in a key conference showdown on Thursday.
“Over the past three games we have really started coming together as a team,” Smrdel said. “Hopefully we carry this momentum into our big game tomorrow against Berkshire.”
