Independence played well enough to win at West Geauga on Saturday but a last second shot by Lindsey Stanforth gave the host Wolverines the 47-45 victory.
The Blue Devils led 13-8 after the first quarter and 26-20 at halftime. West Geauga entered the fourth quarter with a one point lead and came up with a clutch shot at the end to seal its first win of the year.
“The kids played hard,” said Independence coach Mike Marcinko. “Too many turnovers; that was the difference. Both teams made the same amount of shots and free throws.”
Megan Kuczmarski led the Blue Devils with 16 points while Haylee Dmitruk scored 10, Riley Wilson finished with six, Hanah Walker had seven, Sophie Piteo finished with four and Kaitlin Richards pitched in with two.
Stanforth led the Wolverines with 17 points and Bridgette Sexton finished with 12.
West Geauga improved to 1-1 on the year. The Wolverines host Geneva on Wednesday. Independence dropped to 1-2. The Blue Devils host Richmond Heights on Wednesday.
