Mentor drops a pair at Lorain Pipeyard over weekend

Mentor lost two games over the weekend on a trip to the Lorain Pipeyard.

The Cardinals fell to St. Ignatius, 9-1, on May 1. Mentor dropped a heartbreaker to Amherst, 6-5, on May 2.

After a tough outing against the Wildcats, the Cardinals rebounded by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh against Amherst to take a 5-3 edge. Amherst scored three in the bottom of the seventh to stun Mentor and drop the Cardinals to 9-8 on the season.

"We just need to learn to finish games," Mentor coach Jeff Haase said. "We play well in spurts and not so well at other times. Some of it is inexperience and just making routine plays on things we have practiced hundreds of times. I want these guys to forget about the weekend, forget about the first 17 games and just go play baseball."

Matt Eiswerth and Andrew Hurst each had two RBI in the loss to Amherst.

Nathan Birtley had the lone RBI against St. Ignatius, driving in Tyler Thompson.

Mentor earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Division I Euclid District tournament. The Cardinals took a bye and will play the Shaker Heights-Shaw winner on May 13 in a sectional final.
