Mentor looks to break 3-game losing skid with two NOC Valley home games on tap

Mentor will to break a rare three-game losing streak for the first time in several years when the Cardinals host NOC Valley foe Strongsville on Feb. 20.

Mentor (10-8) defeated Strongsville, 77-67, in January led by junior Micah Potter’s 37 points.

Guards Joey Zaugg, Andrew Valeri and Kyle McIntosh also had solid games the first time the teams played, combining for 34 points in the road victory. Valeri, who has missed considerable time since that win with a thumb injury, has been cleared to play in this rematch.

Drew Robertson and Tyler Jamison are key offensive weapons for the Mustangs.

On Feb 24, Mentor hosts Brunswick. The teams played on Feb. 13 with the Blue Devils pulling away for a 69-53 win led by Eric Bulic and Kevin Simmons with 15 points each.

Potter and Zaugg each scored 21 for the Cardinals in the road setback.

Mentor has not won a game in February with the last victory for the Cardinals coming at home on Jan. 31 against Euclid. Mentor is looking for some momentum going into the postseason as the Cardinals host Chardon in a D-I sectional semi on March 4.

NEWS AND NOTES

The Feb. 14 nonconference game between Mentor and Massillon Jackson – postponed because of weather – will not be rescheduled.

With the regular season winding down and the postseason beginning in early March, the teams could not find a date where both were available to play.

The Cardinals and Polar Bear will each finish the regular season with 21 games played.
