Torok, Stipkovich pace Hornets at CVC Swim Meet

Kirtland’s boys and girls swim teams showed vast improvement at the 2015 Chagrin Valley Conference Swim Meet at Hawken on Saturday. The girls finished ninth overall while the boys were 10th.

“Everybody swam very well,” said Kirtland coach John Stipkovich. “Just about everybody had an improvement in at least one race, which was good to see. Typically, we don’t have good swims at that pool, so that was encouraging.”

Senior Sydney Torok and sophomore Matt Stipkovich stood out for the Hornets.

Torok finished 14th in the 100-yard Breaststroke and 16th in the 200-yard Individual Medley. She also teamed up with juniors Maddie Sohngen, Rachel Bramley and Bridget Stark to finish eighth in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay and eighth in the 200-yard Medley Relay.

“Sydney has always had a very strong meet in her 200 and her 100 breaststroke,” Coach Stipkovich said. “She dropped quite a bit of time in her 200 IM. That was an encouraging.

“The girls’ relays did really well. They’ve been trying to drop time. It wasn’t the best time they’ve had this year but they were solid with the competition and they maintained their focus throughout.”

Matt Stipkovich finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

“Matt had two very good swims,” Coach Stipkovich said. “He dropped time in both. It was just a little bit of time, not a lot, but that was encouraging. That’s the first time he swam against people that were really faster than he was, so that was an encouraging result.”

Earlier this week the Hornets boys’ and girls’ teams split a tri-meet with Cuyahoga Heights and Bedford. Both teams defeated Cuyahoga Heights and came up short against the Bearcats.
