VASJ boys volleyball continues to improve

Rytas Petraitis isn't concerned with the Villa Angela-St. Joseph boys volleyball win-loss record.

The first-year Vikings coach is much more interested in the progress of the program, and more importantly, the future.

VASJ won 2 of the first 11 matches played this spring, but the bigger picture is what Petraitis is focused on.

"We get better every day and that is exciting to see," Petraitis said.

"We are in a development phase as a program. I look at the sophomores and the freshmen and what we have coming in and where we can be in a few years and that is what is the most important thing right now. We want to get kids to understand the volleyball culture and I think our guys are getting it."

Senior Denard Zamora has been a standout for the Vikings and Petraitis lauded his effort.

"Any time the ball gets set, you expect Denard to put it down, that is how good he has been," Petraitis said.

VASJ will face a difficult schedule upcoming, including state-ranked Walsh Jesuit at home.
