VASJ girls basketball improves to 18-3 with win over St. Thomas Aquinas

For the second straight game, VASJ trailed entering the fourth quarter against a quality opponent on Feb 14, down by four against St. Thomas Aquinas with 8 minutes to play.

For the second straight game, the Vikings showed the poise and resolve that has led to 18 wins in 21 tries this winter.

Senior captain Mariah McGhee scored 24 points and VASJ outscored Aquinas, 12-6, in the final frame to rally for a 57-55 win. It was the 10th consecutive victory for the Vikings, who improved to 18-3 on the season and have not lost since Jan. 10.

VASJ also came from behind to win at Padua on Feb. 11 when the Vikings erased an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit and sealed the victory with a big play by Aysia Kemp and free throws by Shannon Garvey and McGhee.

The Knights led, 30-20, at halftime against the Vikings before VASJ mounted its comeback and avenged a two-point loss to Aquinas earlier in the season.

Toni Beuck was the other Viking to reach double digits with 10 points against the Knights.

VASJ closes the regular season by playing at rival Cleveland Central Catholic on Feb. 11.
