VASJ optimistic for 2016 as season ends

Villa Angela-St. Joseph ended the 2015 season with a win over Cleveland Heights at the Brush Cheyfitz Tournament.

The Vikings took down the Tigers, 12-4, on May 16 behind another stellar performance by senior Jeff Grudzinski. A second game against Brush began, but was rained out.

VASJ finished the season at 8-18 with a youthful squad that continued to improve as the spring progressed.

The Vikings defeated Cornerstone Christian in a Division IV sectional semi, but fell to top-seeded Cuyahoga Heights, 4-0, in a sectional final.

"This is a good group of kids and I think if we played some of those early games now things might have been different," VASJ coach Scott Gray said. "The biggest thing is we are hoping to get enough kids next year for a freshman/JV team so the young kids get a chance to learn. The experience was big, but there are kids that could use some time learning and getting better before playing varsity."

Grudzinski, David Paus and Danny Gail all finished the year hitting over .400.

Gray said the summer will be a great opportunity for the young Vikings to continue to get better and he looks forward to 2016 with an influx of talent in the upcoming freshman class as well as the improvement of the VASJ players currently on the roster.
