VASJ puts 12-game winning streak on line in sectional title game vs. Fairport

The Villa Angela-St. Joseph girls basketball team hasn't lost a game in over a month.

The Vikings aren't focused on the winning streak as much as they are returning to the Division IV district tournament at Grand Valley after finishing as runner-up in 2014.

One obstacle remains in the way of that goal and that is a Feb. 28 home game in the sectional finals against Fairport.

VASJ is 20-3 and has won 12 straight games since a loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Jan. 10. The Vikings' last victory came in a 76-15 rout over Whitney Young in a sectional semifinal.

VASJ is a deep team led by Mariah McGhee, Toni Beuck, Shannon Garvey, Shamaurice Mowler, Jordan Walker, Kasie Jordan, Angelina Goosby, Emily Mastalski, Aaliyah Owens, Tyonna Foster, Danielle Paus and several other key contributors.

The Skippers advanced to the sectional title game with a 47-23 win over Newbury.

The Fairport-VASJ winner will play either Windham or Warren JFK in a D-IV district semi at Grand Valley on March 4.
