VASJ wrestling performs well at CIT in Toledo

Villa Angela-St. Joseph finished seventh out of 14 teams in the small-school division at the 54th annual Catholic Invitational Tournament at Toledo Central Catholic.

VASJ junior Joey Tromba (24-5) finished second at 132, losing in overtime in the championship match. Tromba lost by decision, 2-1, in OT to Jake Thompson from Cincinnati Moeller.

"We did well and finished about where I thought. Joey wrestled very well and lost a tough match in overtime," VASJ coach Bob Mullin said. "I am pleased with where we are as a team and the direction we are headed.

"It was a great weekend for the boys. We stayed overnight in Toledo and it was a great bonding experience. Especially for the young guys and the ones that are new to the program."

Daniel Cervenik and Mar-Cel English went 2-2 at the CIT. Cervenik and English each have 19 wins this winter for the Vikings. Kevin Mullin has 18 wins for VASJ.

The Vikings are hosting the NCL tournament later this season.
