Independence improves to 2-0 with win at Cardinal


MIDDLEFIELD—Rory Corrigan ran for a touchdown, threw for another and scored on a pick-six to lead Independence to a 36-6 win at Cardinal in the CVC TV Game of the Week on Friday.

Corrigan opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run and Casey McGhee added the extra point to give the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils scored 22 points in the second quarter on a 41-yard McGhee field goal, Kyle Zygmunt’s 53-yard run, an 85-yard pass from Zygmunt to Eric Mitrisin, and Corrigan’s 55-yard touchdown pass to Mitrisin, who also had a 68-yard touchdown reception negated by a penalty.

Cardinal’s Joey Soltis ran for a two-yard score to keep the Huskies in the game at the break.

Corrigan closed out the scoring with a 55-yard interception return in the second half.

The Blue Devils host Orange in Week 3 with a chance to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2012 while Cardinal will seek its first win of the season at Kirtland.
