Alston runs for 240 yards as Skippers top Newbury

Rashawn Alston ran for a career-high 240 yards and scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to lead Fairport Harding to a 14-7 win over host Newbury on Friday.

“Credit to our offensive line for providing holes all night and to Alston for his extra effort,” said Fairport coach Cameron Ruff.

Newbury quarterback Noah Parsons scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter to give the Black Knights a 7-0 lead. Parsons finished with 101 yards on 19 carries.

That lead held up until Alston ran for the first of his two scores and a two-point conversion that left Fairport ahead, 8-7, with 3:55 left in the third.

Alston added another touchdown run in with 5:21 left to play in the game.

Fairport’s defense did the rest.

“Our defense read their keys consistently and made gang tackles all night,” Ruff said. “Our defensive backs made some big-time pass breakups and our defensive line played together all night.”

Evan Bish added 59 rushing yards on 12 carries and Cody Paugh carried five times for 16 yards for the Skippers.

Fairport hosts Brooklyn in Week 2 while Newbury travels to St. John.
