Willoughby South Football survives Civil War thriller to claim CVC crown

This story first appeared onOhioVarsity.com

EASTLAKE—The stakes had never been higher in the , and Friday’s showdown between unbeaten neighborhood rivals delivered the kind of drama the series has become known for.

Willoughby built a two-touchdown lead and held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by to escape Carter Stadium with a 21-14 victory, securing the Lake Division championship in the Rebels’ inaugural season in the league.

The victory improved South to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while North dropped to 8-1 and finished its Lake Division schedule at 5-1.

Even if South falls to Lutheran West in next week’s regular-season finale, the Rebels would own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rangers and claim the division championship.

For South coach , the championship was a fitting reward for a that has answered every challenge through nine weeks.

“It’s fantastic, and the kids have earned it,” Duffy said. “They’ve worked their tails off. We’ve got a lot of gritty kids, and I think you saw that in the game. Gritty kids on both sides of the ball.”

Neither team managed to score in the opening quarter, but South broke through early in the second when took a reverse 16 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

North quickly answered.

broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run, pulling the Rangers even at 7-7.

South responded behind its passing attack.

Quarterback connected with his brother, , for a 10-yard touchdown pass that gave the Rebels a 14-7 advantage heading into halftime.

The Rebels extended their lead in the second half, converting a critical fourth down when Luke Jensen connected with Mock for a 17-yard gain.

finished the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run, pushing South’s advantage to 21-7.

With their unbeaten season and conference championship hopes hanging in the balance, the Rangers refused to go quietly.

provided the spark, breaking loose for a 31-yard touchdown run on fourth down to trim South’s lead to 21-14 in the final quarter.

North’s defense then gave the Rangers additional opportunities, forcing South to punt and keeping the deficit at seven.

The Rebels answered with defensive stops of their own, including a fourth-down tackle for loss by Mock that ended one North possession.

The Rangers had one final opportunity to force overtime.

Fenick connected with for a 46-yard gain that moved North deep into South territory and put the Rangers in position to complete the comeback.

But South’s defense delivered the decisive play.

intercepted a pass in the end zone, ending North’s final threat and preserving the Rebels’ seven-point victory.

The defensive stand completed a gritty performance by South against a North team that had opened the season with eight consecutive victories for the first time in school history.

Luke Jensen finished 12-of-18 passing for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Jensen caught six passes for 56 yards and a score.

Fullerton carried 19 times for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Mock accounted for 33 yards on two offensive touches, including his 16-yard scoring run.

South’s ability to finish drives and make critical defensive stops proved to be the difference in a game in which neither team could afford many mistakes.

“It’s been different because we’ve played seven teams this year that I’ve never coached against,” Duffy said. “But here we are, and we’re nine and zero.”

The victory also continued South’s success in the neighborhood rivalry, following the Rebels’ 33-13 win over North last season.

For North, Friday’s defeat brought an end to the best start in school history, but it did little to diminish what the Rangers have accomplished.

North coach praised his team’s effort and determination throughout the contest.

“Proud of the effort, especially the fight all the way up until the end,” Dodd said. “They’ve kind of shown that all season long. Regardless of the score, they’ve played hard, and that’s what we want to see out of them.”

The Rangers relied heavily on their ground game throughout the evening.

Whaley led North with 86 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Mattice added 83 yards on 22 attempts.

Fenick contributed 82 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries, giving the Rangers three productive options against South’s defense.

Despite losing their undefeated record and the conference title, the Rangers remain in position to finish the regular season with nine victories and enter the postseason with momentum.

Dodd emphasized that one defeat would not change how he views his or their accomplishments.

“We told the guys before the game, regardless of the outcome, our opinions of them and our love for them don’ change, whether we win or lose, and that is still true,” Dodd said. “It’s unfortunate to lose; we’ll get better.”

Both teams return to action on Friday, Oct. 23, for their regular-season finales.

North travels to Hawken looking to rebound from its first defeat, while South hosts Lutheran West with an opportunity to complete a perfect 10-0 regular season.

For the Rebels, the conference championship is already secured, but their pursuit of an unbeaten season and a deep postseason run continues.

“These kids are coming out ready to play,” Duffy said. “They’ll work hard in practice this week and try to put themselves together as a 10-0 football team.”
