Civil War 2026: Undefeated North, South clash for CVC Lake Division title

This story first appeared onOhioVarsity.com

For 364 days, the is about bragging rights.

For one night, it’s about everything.

An undefeated season. A conference championship. Playoff positioning. A place in school history.

And the right to call the other side of town the losing side for the next 12 months.

When and collide Friday night at Carter Stadium in Eastlake, the stakes will be unlike almost anything the storied rivalry has experienced.

Both teams are 8-0.

Both have spent the first eight weeks dismantling opponents, overcoming challenges, and climbing the regional playoff rankings.

And both understand that only one will leave Friday night’s meeting in the series with a perfect record and the Lake Division championship.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. in the CVC TV Game of the Week and will also be televised by Rock Entertainment Sports Network on Spectrum.

For North, it’s an opportunity to complete an extraordinary turnaround and establish a new standard for a program enjoying the best start in school history.

For South, it’s a chance to extend its dominance in the rivalry and move within one victory of another perfect regular season.

The Rangers have history to make.

The Rebels have history to defend.

And for three hours Friday night, Eastlake will be the center of the Northeast Ohio high school football universe.

TV Game of the Week: The Civil War

Friday’s showdown has been selected as the CVC TV Game of the Week, bringing one of Northeast Ohio’s most storied rivalries to a regional audience with an undefeated showdown and conference championship at stake.

will provide coverage of the game, while Rock Entertainment Sports Network will carry the contest on Spectrum.

The matchup also provides an opportunity to showcase two programs that have taken different paths to the same destination: 8-0.

North has made history with its best start in school history behind a punishing running game and an opportunistic defense.

South has continued its tradition of success with an explosive passing attack and a collection of playmakers capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.

The contrast in offensive styles, combined with the intensity of the rivalry, makes Friday’s game a compelling matchup on paper.

But this isn’ just another Friday night.

It’s the Civil War.

And this year, the winner takes the conference championship.

GAME INFORMATION

What’s at stake: Winner takes the Lake

Forget the complicated championship scenarios, scoreboard watching, and hoping for help in the final week of the regular season.

The stakes couldn’t be simpler.

Win the Civil War. Win the CVC Lake Division championship.

North (8-0, 5-0) can clinch the title outright by defeating South, completing an undefeated 6-0 run through the division.

The Rebels (8-0, 4-0) can secure the championship just as decisively.

A South victory would improve the Rebels to 5-0 in league play and give them the head-to-head tiebreaker over North. Even if South falls to Lutheran West in Week 10 and finishes 5-1, the Rebels would win the title based on their head-to-head result with the Rangers.

Beyond the conference championship, each program has a perfect regular season within reach.

North has never started a season 9-0. The Rangers have already made history with their 8-0 start, and one more victory inches them closer to their first perfect regular season in school history.

South, meanwhile, is chasing its first 9-0 start since 2012, the last season the Rebels completed the regular season unbeaten.

There is also postseason positioning at stake.

South enters as the No. 1 in Division III, Region 9, according to the official Ohio High School Athletic Association computer ratings, with an 18.9250 average.

North is sixth in Division II, Region 5, with a 16.9250 average.

A victory over an undefeated opponent would provide valuable playoff computer points as both teams prepare for the postseason.

A conference title. A ninth consecutive victory. A major step toward a perfect regular season.

And, of course, a year’s worth of bragging rights.

By the numbers: Two teams separated by inches

Through eight games, North and South have produced remarkably similar results.

The Rebels have scored 306 points and allowed 89, an average of 38.3 scored and 11.1 surrendered per game.

The Rangers have scored 291 and allowed 75, an average of 36.4 scored and 9.4 allowed.

South’s average margin of victory is 27.1 points.

North’s is 27.0.

That’s one-tenth of a point separating the teams’ average victory margins after eight weeks.

The similarities are remarkable, particularly considering how differently the teams have built their success.

North has leaned on a powerful, physical rushing attack and a defense that has recorded three shutouts.

South has used an explosive passing game, a productive group of running backs, and a defense capable of making game-changing plays.

Both teams have enough firepower to take control in a hurry.

But Friday’s matchup will test something they haven’t experienced very often this season: an opponent equally capable of controlling the game.

South’s offense: Jensen and the Rebels’ big-play machine

South’s offensive success begins with senior quarterback , who has emerged as one of the area’s most productive passers.

Jensen has completed 100 of 155 passes for 1,925 yards and 23 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

His ability to stretch defenses vertically has turned the Rebels into a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

And he’s hardly working alone.

Junior leads South’s receivers with 31 catches for 784 yards and 10 touchdowns. His average of more than 25 yards per reception illustrates just how dangerous he can be when he gets behind a defense.

Junior has contributed 20 catches for 456 yards and three touchdowns, while senior has caught 17 passes for 295 yards and four scores.

has added nine receptions for 178 yards, giving Luke Jensen another reliable option in an offense loaded with playmakers.

But South is far from a one-dimensional passing team.

Junior has rushed for 449 yards and six touchdowns on 84 carries, while sophomore has added 414 yards and five touchdowns on 79 attempts.

Jensen has contributed another 228 rushing yards and two touchdowns, forcing defenses to account for the quarterback as both a passer and runner.

The Rebels’ balance creates a significant problem for opposing defenses.

Commit too many defenders to stopping the run, and Jensen can attack through the air.

Drop additional defenders into coverage, and South has the running backs to punish a lighter defensive front.

The challenge for North will be finding a way to slow both dimensions without surrendering the explosive plays that have fueled South’s undefeated start.

North’s offense: Ground control and a stable of playmakers

While South has used its passing game to attack defenses, North has carved out an identity built around a punishing and explosive ground attack.

The Rangers feature one of the area’s deepest collections of productive runners.

Mattice leads the way with 791 yards on 137 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt.

has added 479 yards on just 56 carries, an average of 8.6 yards per attempt, while has rushed for 399 yards on 84 attempts.

has contributed another 299 yards on 44 carries, and has produced 266 yards on only 18 attempts.

Together, those five have accounted for 2,234 rushing yards.

That’s nearly 280 yards per game from five different ball carriers.

The production gives North the flexibility to attack defenses in different ways.

Mattice can handle a substantial workload. Whaley and Palmer offer explosive potential. Young provides another reliable option, while Fenick adds a physical dimension to the offense.

That balance has helped North average more than 36 points per game despite a limited passing attack.

Fenick has been particularly effective near the goal line, accounting for 13 touchdowns and four two-point conversions for a team-leading 86 points.

Mattice has scored 14 touchdowns and 84 points.

North doesn’t need to rely on one player to carry its offense.

The Rangers simply need to keep moving the chains, creating favorable down-and-distance situations, and forcing defenses to tackle a succession of capable runners.

For South, the objective will be clear: win at the line of scrimmage, limit North’s explosive runs, and force the Rangers into situations where they must operate outside their preferred offensive approach.

The defensive battle could decide everything

The offensive numbers are impressive, but both teams have reached 8-0 because they can play defense.

North has surrendered just 75 points this season and has blanked Valley Forge, Harvey, and Lutheran West.

The Rangers have been particularly effective at disrupting offenses behind the line of scrimmage.

leads North with seven sacks and 20 tackles for loss.

Fenick has added five sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while has four sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

has contributed three sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

The Rangers also feature an opportunistic secondary.

leads the team with four interceptions, Whaley has three, and and have two apiece.

Palmer has added another interception.

That collection of ballhawks will face its most significant challenge yet against South’s explosive passing attack.

The Rebels, meanwhile, have shown their own ability to change games with defensive pressure and turnovers.

leads South with four sacks, while and Josh Jensen have three apiece.

and have added two sacks each.

South’s defense has recorded 14 interceptions, including three apiece for Morgan, Luke Jensen, and Balash.

provided one of the Rebels’ biggest defensive highlights in their 42-6 victory over Harvey, returning an interception 65 yards for a touchdown.

Both defenses can generate pressure.

Both can force mistakes.

And both are capable of turning one offensive miscue into a game-changing score.

In a rivalry matchup that could be decided by a single possession, protecting the football might prove just as important as moving it.

Recent history: South has owned the rivalry

The Rebels enter Friday’s game with a significant historical advantage.

South leads the recorded series since 1972, 34-19-1, and has won the last two meetings.

More impressively, South has captured 22 of the previous 26 matchups, a stretch of dominance extending across multiple generations of players.

The Rebels won 14 consecutive Civil War meetings from 2004 through 2017 before North ended the streak with a 37-29 victory in 2018.

North’s most recent victory came in 2023, when the Rangers prevailed, 10-3, in a defensive struggle.

South answered with a 27-7 victory in 2024 and a 33-13 win last fall.

That 2025 contest offered a lesson in how quickly momentum can shift.

North opened with an impressive 16-play touchdown drive to take a 7-0 lead.

But South responded with 33 unanswered points, including a 49-yard touchdown pass from Luke Jensen to Mock, and took control of the game.

The Rangers have not forgotten.

A year later, they return with an undefeated record, home-field advantage, and perhaps their best opportunity in years to shift the rivalry’s momentum.

South, meanwhile, has no intention of surrendering the upper hand.

The Rebels know what it means to win this game.

They have made a habit of doing it.

The rankings: Two of the area’s best

Friday’s matchup features teams that have earned recognition from multiple ranking systems.

South sits atop the official OHSAA Division III, Region 9 computer ratings, while North is sixth in Division II, Region 5.

In the September 29 Associated Press state poll, South received 38 points and was listed 11th in Division III among teams receiving votes.

North received seven points and was listed 15th in Division II.

The October 11 MaxPreps Cleveland-area rankings placed South 33rd with a 53.64 rating and North 39th with a 51.55 rating.

The OhioVarsity.com Matchup Predictor also recognizes the competitive balance between the teams.

South holds a narrow 53-percent modeled win probability compared with North’s 47 percent, with the system projecting a 24-23 Rebels victory.

The model gives South the advantage in recent head-to-head performance and overall series history, while North receives a boost for playing at home.

The predictor also rates the teams’ current program strength as even.

Of course, computer ratings and historical comparisons won’t make a tackle, complete a pass, or convert a third down Friday night.

But they help illustrate why this edition of the Civil War has generated so much anticipation.

Five keys to the Civil War

1. Can South contain North’s rushing attack?

The Rangers’ depth in the backfield makes them difficult to defend. South must limit yards after contact, prevent explosive runs, and force North to earn every first down.

2. Can North keep Luke Jensen from taking over?

South’s quarterback has 23 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. North’s pass rush must disrupt his timing without leaving his receivers free to make big plays downfield.

3. Who wins the turnover battle?

Both defenses have proven capable of forcing interceptions and creating points from mistakes. A single takeaway could decide a matchup between two evenly matched teams.

4. Which team controls the line of scrimmage?

North wants to establish its physical rushing attack. South needs enough protection for its passing game and space for its backs. The battle in the trenches could determine which offense dictates the tempo.

5. Who handles the moment?

Both teams have played in big games, but neither has experienced this particular combination of pressure: an undefeated rivalry showdown with a conference championship at stake. Discipline, composure, and execution in the fourth quarter could separate the winner from the loser.

A chance to write a new chapter

The Civil War has delivered just about everything imaginable.

An 88-point shootout in 2008.

One-point decisions in 1983, 1984, and 1997.

An overtime thriller in 2020.

A defensive classic in 2023.

Streaks have been built, broken, and remembered long after the players involved graduated.

But there has never been a recorded meeting quite like this one.

Two teams. Eight wins apiece. No losses.

And a conference championship that will be decided by what happens between the lines.

For North, a victory would announce that the Rangers’ remarkable transformation is more than a great start. It would be a championship season built on the foundation of the best opening stretch in school history.

For South, a victory would extend an era of Civil War dominance and carry the Rebels one step closer to another perfect regular season.

There will be no shortage of emotion when the teams take the field Friday.

No shortage of talent.

And certainly no shortage of reasons to win.

Because when the final whistle sounds, one team will have its ninth consecutive victory, a CVC Lake Division championship, and the right to celebrate on the field at Carter Stadium.

The other will be left wondering what might have been.

That’s the beauty of the Civil War.

That’s the cruelty of the Civil War.

And that’s what makes Friday night so special.
