Beachwood trips up Kirtland

Beachwood took early control of its Chagrin Valley Conference match at Kirtland on Tuesday then held off the Hornets in a 3-0 win.

The Bison won the first set 25-16 then closed out the match with identical 25-23 wins in the second and third sets.

“Beachwood came out with great energy in the first set,” said Beachwood coach Tiffany McFarland. “Kirtland started to get a little momentum and we started to make more errors. Our libero, Nicole (Petty), was great on defense. She was able to pass successfully in serve receive against Kirtland’s great servers.”

Erion Gibson led the Bison with four kills, five stuff blocks and two block assists. Damilola Aletor recorded eight service points, including a run in the third set to close out the match.

“We were down in the third set, 17-22,” McFarland said. “Her float serve allowed her to go on a run and finish the game. Junior Erion Gibson was great at the net.”

The Bison, who improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in league play, rallied together when they were down to complete the match.

“We have a great team but we like to play with our backs against the wall,” McFarland said. “They know how to rally together and put up a great performance.”

Beachwood travels to Cardinal on Thursday.
