Haylee Dmitruk scored 17 points to lead Independence to a 58-29 win at Richmond Heights in the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division opener for both teams on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 20-9 first quarter lead and had little trouble holding off the Spartans.
“Defensively, the gals really got after it getting stops and run outs,” said Independence coach Mike Marcinko. “I’m really happy with the mental and physical effort coming off a weekend of three games.”
Riley Wilson added 14 points and Reni Kaiser also finished in double figures for the Blue Devils with 10 points. Riccela DiGeronimo pitched in with nine, Madison Stepanik finished with four, Amy Ksiazka contributed with three and Kaitlyn Richards scored one point in the win.
“We are 1-0 in the CVC and the girls really took charge tonight,” Marcinko said. “We have won three of the last four. It’s been a good and tiring week.”
Independence opened the season with a 2-1 record and second place finish at Andrews-Osborne’s Melanie Williams Invitational over the weekend.
To allow the Blue Devils to rest their legs, Marcinko put together a pool party for the team on Monday and focused on mental preparation on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils, who improved to 3-2 on the year, host Fairview in a non-conference game on Monday.
