Blue Devils sweep tri-match

Independence battled the elements but came away with a tri-match sweep of Trinity and Wickliffe at Shawnee Hills Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils, who improved to 5-3, shot a match-low 191 while Wickliffe finished second with a 208 and Trinity finished with a 243.

“I was happy to get a couple of wins tonight,” said Independence coach Mark Echstenkamper. “The conditions were less than ideal as everything was very wet. I know the saturated greens had a big impact on our putting, which is one of the reasons the scores were higher than normal. I was proud of the way the guys fought through the bad conditions.”

Carson Bianco won medalist honors and led the Blue Devils with a 44. Tyler Sagi carded a 47, Hugh Corrigan shot 48 and Jon Rydzinski finished with a 52.

Andrew Michalski led Wickliffe with a 46, Calvin Cackowski shot a 50, Mario Cefaratti finished with a 51 and Robbie Veri rounded out the scoring with a 61.

Leading the way for Trinity, a future member of the Chagrin Valley Conference, was Anthony Basmagy, who shot a 53. Luke Wessel (66), Joe Rolando (60) and Robbie Witkowski (64) also scored for the Trojans.
