Cackowski leads Wickliffe to win

Calvin Cackowski shot a 1-under 35 to lead Wickliffe to a 172-175 nonconference win over visiting Columbia on Friday.

With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 2-1 on the year.

“The team effort was great today and it was great to see us rebound and respond from a close loss we had earlier in the week to a good Lutheran West team,” Wickliffe coach Harrison McCall said. “The level of focus and effort today was very high from our entire roster and this is a great result to head into the weekend with. We placed a focus on the importance of every shot throughout a round and that came to fruition today with this match only being decided by three strokes.”

Cackowski’s subpar round fueled the close win but Wickliffe’s other scoring golfers also carded solid scores.

Gabe Stoehr shot a 44 and Noah Telisman and Colin Casey finished with a 46. Colin Casey, Ryan Latkovich and A.J. Levon each shot 47.

Cackowski and Stoehr both posted career-best scores.

“They led the way today but we were very solid throughout our entire lineup,” McCall said. “Our team continues to compete with each other at every practice, which I believe has been very beneficial in preparing them for matches. We are still relatively young experience-wise and today we had four players in the lineup who are in their first year of competitive golf. It was great to be able to pull out a close victory against a quality Columbia team.”
