CVC Athletes of the Week

Student-athletes from Cardinal, Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga Heights, Harvey and Independence have been selected as the CVC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 21.

Each student-athlete was nominated by his or her coach.

  • Name: Gil Hammond
  • School: Harvey
  • Grade: 11
  • Stats: Carried 22 times for 216 yards and two scores and also recorded 10 tackles
  • Coach’s Quote: “Gil Hammond had an outstanding all-around game for us,” Harvey coach Dan Cvelbar said. “He was the juggernaut we needed to win the football game on Friday. I was really proud of the game that he played because this is a young man who is always willing to put the team before himself.”

  • Name: Sam Shafer
  • School: Cuyahoga Heights
  • Grade: 11
  • Stats: Passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 58 yards and two scores; also posted two quarterback hurries on defense

  • Name: Trey Shirkey
  • School: Cardinal
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Rushed for 195 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns and a two-point conversion; also led the Huskies with 13 tackles
  • Coach’s Quote: “After missing half the season with fractures of both tibia and fibula, Trey has come on strong in the second half of the season,” Cardinal coach Eric Cardinal said. “This week’s game was his best thus far from the point of view of both sides of the ball, leading our team in tackles, rushing and scoring. It was a very good all-around performance.”

  • Name: Sam Belitz
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Recorded his eight hat trick of the season in a sectional championship win
  • Coach’s Quote: “With the pressure of playoff soccer upon us, Sam continues to make plays and dominate opponents,” Independence coach Ryan MacRaild said. “His buildup and attacking along with connecting defense with forwards create a well-balanced game for the team.”

Name: Cole Weiss
School: Chagrin Falls
Grade: 12
Stats: Recorded two shutouts in wins over Woodridge and Field
Coach’s Quote: “Cole has been instrumental in our current 14-2-1 record,” Chagrin Falls coach Brian McKenna said. “He has tended the goal in 11 of our 12 shutouts. Overall, he has given up only six goals this season for a 0.35 goals against per game.”
