CVC Athletes of the Week

Student-athletes from Fairport Harding, Geneva, Harvey, Hawken, Independence, Kirtland, and Orange have been selected as the CVC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23.

Each student-athlete was nominated by his or her coach.

CROSS COUNTRY

David BoykinDAVID BOYKIN, HARVEY

Name: David Boykin

  • School: Harvey
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Finished fifth at the Cardinal Invitational with a time of 17:14
    Coach’s Quote: “David ran a very competitive race,” said Harvey coach Torrez Edwards. “He got out fast to his first mile and kept that fast pace to the finish his race. David timed his race very well as he picked up he his tempo in key moments of the race. Coming off two rough races, it was good to see David run at a fast level again.”

Reilly Greenlee

REILLY GREENLEE, KIRTLAND

  • Name: Reilly Greenlee
  • School: Kirtland
  • Grade: 9
  • Stats: Finished 11th and 19th at the Grand Valley Invitational and Cardinal Invitational, respectively, to lead the team to a top-five finish at each meet
  • Coach’s Quote: “Reilly has been having a solid season for a freshman after working through some early season dings while competing in soccer and cross country this fall for Kirtland,” said Kirtland coach JP Moran. “She has been part of a solid dual sport one-two punch the past few weeks for us to lead us to high team finishes at our past invitationals.”

Robert ArtripROBERT ARTRIP, INDEPENDENCE

  • Name: Robert Artrip
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Carried 18 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass, completed 3-of-4 passes for 20 yards and returned two punts for 89 yards; he also recorded five tackles on defense
  • Coach’s Quote: “Robert has been a workhorse for us all season and had a great all-around game offensively and defensively,” said Independence coach Rick Adams. “The offensive line also did a fantastic job opening holes for him.”

BOYS SOCCER

Hunter KasparianHUNTER KASPARIAN, ORANGE

  • Name: Hunter Kasparian
  • School: Orange
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Perry
  • Coach’s Quote: “Hunter caused constant problems for the Perry defense with relentless drives down the left-hand side of the field,” said Orange coach Declan McGivern. “Hunter created multiple chances for his team and scored the winning goal after cutting in from the left-hand side and hammering a right footed shot into the bottom corner from outside the box. Hunter isolated himself out wide several times and his ability to beat players one-on-one proved decisive in the team’s hard-fought 1-0 win in conference play against a very well organized and disciplined Perry side.”

Grant MihalickGRANT MIHALICK, GENEVA

  • Name: Grant Mihalick
  • School: Geneva
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Scored three goals with two assists in two games
  • Coach’s Quote: “Grant has been the man behind the scenes for most of the season,” said Geneva coach Jeff Hull. “He does all the dirty work that has helped our team be successful. It was great to see him get on the score sheet this week with a seven-point performance against Garfield Heights. He played an excellent game against NDCL where he all but put the ball in the net in setting up our first goal.”

GIRLS TENNIS

Dylan GoldbergDYLAN GOLDBERG, HAWKEN

  • Name: Dylan Goldberg
  • School: Hawken
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Won the second singles championship top pace the Hawks to the team title at the 2018 CVC Tournament
  • Coach’s Quote: “Senior captain Dylan Goldberg has commandeered our team to a conference title as a second singles champion,” said Hawken coach Brian Smallwood. “This two-time district qualifier is looking forward to the postseason and I am confident that she will do well.”

VOLLEYBALL

Hannah BabbittHANNAH BABBITT, FAIRPORT HARDING

  • Name: Hannah Babbitt
  • School: Fairport Harding
  • Grade: 11
  • Stats: Recorded 132 digs, 116 successful serves received, 46 serves with only two errors, seven aces and seven back row kills in 19 sets
  • Coach’s Quote: “A first-year junior libero and speaking captain Hannah Babbitt has had an outstanding week for the Lady Skippers,” said Fairport coach Mike Fitzgerald. “Hannah always works hard at practice and it shows in her play as she continues to improve. Hannah is also one of several players that help me out on our off day—Friday–to work with our middle school volleyballers.”

Lexi ProkopiusLEXI PROKOPIUS, INDEPENDENCE

  • Name: Lexi Prokopius
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Recorded 42 kills, 21 service points and nine digs in five matches
  • Coach’s Quote: “Lexi is a four-year varsity player and a captain,” said Independence coach Tony Messina. “Lexi has worked hard to improve her volleyball skills. She has become one of the team’s leaders and has helped our younger players with their transition to varsity.”

Steve Hare is the Chagrin Valley Conference's Sports Information Director. He also created and publishes OhioVarsity.com, an online publication dedicated to providing hyperlocal coverage to area high school athletic programs. Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986. He played football, wrestled and was an all-Geauga county baseball player (1986). He lives in Chardon with his wife Paulette and their children.
