Edgewood tops West Geauga in home opener

Good teams protect their home court and Edgewood did just that in their home opener on Saturday against West Geauga.

The Warriors ran away with a 59-40 win over the Wolverines to improve to 2-0 on the year.

“The girls played hard in our season home opener,” said Edgewood coach Randy Vencill. “They showed a lot of heart and made it through a rollercoaster of a first half.”

Edgewood battled through a challenging first half and then amped up the pressure on the defensive end to steal the momentum from the Wolverines.

“The team took their defense up a notch and some of our shots started falling,” Vencill said. “Our defense led to good offense.”

Katie McCollister led the Warriors with 26 points and Mckenna Vencill and Leigha Guyton both scored 10. Annie Mae Johnston contributed to the win with seven points and Avery Vencill added six.

“It was a total team effort from all the girls,” Coach Vencill said. ‘They played hard, and they played as a team. We still have a bunch to work on, but we are improving each game.”

With the win, the Warriors head into league play with a signature win and a lot of confidence.

“I feel like this was a solid win for our program,” Vencill said. “West Geauga has a great program year in and year out. Any time you can get a win against a quality program it has a huge impact.”
