Geneva doubles up on Chagrin Division titles

MIDDLEFIELD—Geneva’s boys and girls cross country teams both took home Chagrin Division championships at the 2018 Chagrin Valley Conference cross country championships at Cardinal High School on Saturday.

The Eagles finished with 45 points to win the girls’ race. Chagrin Falls was second with 48 and Perry rounded out the top three with 56. Geneva was more dominant in the boys’ race as the Eagles finished with 24 points while Hawken was second with 78 and West Geauga finished third with 87.

“It’s very exciting,” said Geneva coach Emily Long about doubling up on the CVC titles. “To come in and have both of them win the CVC championship is huge. They both won our all-county meet this year, so we knew we could do it.”

Geneva placed seven boys among the top 14.

Forrest Long won the individual title with a time of 16:53. Jacob Mirabell (16:55) was second, Alex Reese (17:41) finished seventh and Jacob Robinson (17:51) and Jesse McElroy (17:53) also finished among the top 10 with Robinson placing ninth and McElroy coming in at 10th.

Elizabeth Joy led the Geneva girls with a time of 20:22, good for second place. Taylor Cupp, Renee Tetlow and Leah Costello also finished among the top 15.

Cupp was sixth with a time of 20:51, Tetlow finished eighth in 21:00 and Costello placed 11th in 21:15.

“Some of them didn’t run their best last week so they knew they had to come back and to work as a team to get this done and they did it,” Coach Long said. “Definitely, this is a real confidence booster going into districts for next week and that’s what we wanted out of today.”
