Geneva within striking distance at Riverside Rumble

Geneva closed out the first day of the 2018 Riverside Rumble in second place behind the host Beavers.

Riverside enters Day 2 with 155 points with Geneva close behind with 140. Chagrin Falls is 16th with 34.5 points.

“The boys came into the tournament determined and focused,” Geneva coach Chris Stamper said. “They wrestled smart and strong and are looking to continue the same way on Day 2.”

Geneva’s Jayden Sabol (106), Brier Streets (113), Josh Cupp (120), Johnny Wayslaw (126), Jesse McElroy (132), Braden Bilicic (152), Caleb Selman (160), Cole Vennis (170), Brad Harper (195) and Charles Taylor (220) all advanced to Saturday’s championship bracket.

Sabol finished pool wrestling with a 2-0 mark and two pins. Wayslaw, McElroy, Selman, Bilicic and Taylor all finished the day 3-0 with three pins. Streets was 3-0 with two pins, Cupp was 2-1 with two pins and Vennis and Harper both ended Day 1 with a 2-1 record and one pin.

Taylor needed just 59 seconds to pin all three of his first day opponents.

Chagrin Falls’ Alex Maciech (113), Jonathan Mares (132) and Henry Woofter (285) also advanced to the championship bracket.

Woofter pinned all three of his foes in just 1 minute, 48 seconds. Maciech and Mares ended the day with a 2-1 record.

Steve Hare is the Chagrin Valley Conference's Sports Information Director. He also created and publishes OhioVarsity.com, an online publication dedicated to providing hyperlocal coverage to area high school athletic programs. Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986. He played football, wrestled and was an all-Geauga county baseball player (1986). He lives in Chardon with his wife Paulette and their children.
