CHESTERLAND—Independence lost just one player from the team that reached the Division III state final four last year and it showed as the Blue Devils cruised to a three-set win at West Geauga on Thursday.
The Blue Devils won 25-9, 25-5, 25-14 to improve to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division.
“The girls are playing great right now,” said Independence coach Tony Messina. “We’re getting it but it’s a process with a new offense, a 6-2. We have some young girls coming in with the seniors and the girls who have been here. We went to the Final Four last year and we lost one player but it’s a new team. I look at it as a new team and so far they’re doing a great job. Right now, we’re on a good path.”
West Geauga led the first set, 7-4, before the Blue Devils ripped off 12 straight points to take control of the match.
The Blue Devils then scored the first 13 points of the second set on their way to the sweep.
Independence hosts Perry on Tuesday while West Geauga will entertain Orange.
