Independence cruises to win in battle of Blue Devils

Top-seeded Independence quickly dispatched No. 5 Wickliffe in a Division III district semifinal at Elyria High School on Wednesday, 3-0.

The defending district champions won the match 25-10, 25-8, 25-15.

“The team has one goal and we are hungry for it,” Independence senior Lexi Prokopius said. “We all know that we have to give 110-percent to advance to the next game.”

Independence excelled in all facets of the game.

“We did a good job being aggressive with our serving and hitting,” Prokopius said. “Our defense was amazing, like always.”

The Blue Devils advanced to Saturday’s district championship game against second-seeded Oberlin.

Independence is shooting for its second straight district championship and fourth in the past six seasons.

“We approach Saturday like every game we do,” Prokopius said. “Play hard, don’t let up and each player gives a 110-percent.”

Saturday’s match begins at 2:30 p.m.
