A new rotation led to another win and a season-high 40 kills for the Independence volleyball team.
The Blue Devils swept visiting Wickliffe on Tuesday, 3-0.
“We tried a new lineup tonight and Katie May stepped into a 5-1 setting role,” said Independence coach Megan Osysko. “The team adapted well and played a good match in our home opener.”
Independence won 25-8, 25-14, 25-13.
Sophomore Kalli Screptock led Independence with 11 kills while senior Maura Collins put 10 balls on the floor.
Seven different Blue Devils recorded at least one kill in the match.
“Our hitters collectively played a great match and found the floor many times,” Osysko said.
May, a junior, recorded 31 of Independence’s 38 assists.
“It was nice to run a 5-1 again and our passing tonight made it very comfortable,” May said. “It helped me spread the ball around and quarterback the team to victory.”
Sophomore Maddy Bilinovic recorded team-highs with six service aces and 14 digs and junior Lexi Prokopius led the squad with three blocks.
Independence improved to 3-0 with a big test looming on Wednesday when the Blue Devils step outside of conference play in a home match with Kenston.
“I feel as a team we were pretty confident but understand we still need to earn each match,” May said. “We have been working very hard in practice to focus on the details and together as a team I think it is starting to show.”
