Independence to induct three into Hall of Fame

Independence’s athletic Hall of Fame will grow by three members on Jan. 26.

Greg Dailey, Zach Skoczen, and Josh Suvak all will be recognized during halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game against rival Cuyahoga Heights. On Sunday, Jan. 28, the new inductees will be formally inducted during a luncheon at Independence High School.

All three new inductees graduated from Independence in 2010.

Greg DaileyGreg Dailey participated in football and wrestling where he earned three varsity letters in the latter sport. Dailey was the wrestling team captain as a senior along with being the team MVP in 2008 and 2009. He earned First Team All-Chagrin Valley Conference honors and was the Athletic Boosters Athlete of the Week in both 2008 and 2009. The most significant accomplishments during Dailey’s outstanding wrestling career came during his junior year when he placed seventh in the Division III State Championships and as a senior when he finished as the state runner-up at heavyweight. Dailey earned First Team All-Ohio recognition during both seasons.
Zach SkoczenZach Skoczen participated in cross country and track & field where he earned four varsity letters in each sport. Skoczen was the team captain of both sports teams during his senior season. He earned First Team All-Chagrin Valley Conference in cross country and was the Athletic Boosters Athlete of the Week in both 2008 and 2009. Skoczen qualified for the state cross country meet as a junior in 2008 but his senior season was one to remember. He earned First Team All-Sun Newspaper, Damon’s Athlete of the Month and he was named First Team All-Ohio after he placed 14th at the Division III state championship. In addition, Skoczen was the Athletic Boosters Male Athlete of the Year along with being selected as the recipient of the St. Michael’s Russell Barnes Award. Finally, Skoczen and his teammates won conference and district titles in 2008 and 2009, the regional title in 2009 and capped the 2009 season by winning the Division III state title. Skoczen went on to earn a varsity letter in cross country at Tiffin University.
Josh SuvakJosh Suvak participated in golf and baseball where he earned two and three varsity letters, respectively. Suvak was the team captain of both teams during his senior year along with being the baseball team’s Golden Arm Award recipient. The 2010 season was truly memorable for Suvak and his teammates. Suvak was named First Team All-Chagrin Valley Conference in 2009 and 2010 and was a First Team All-Ohio Pitcher in 2010. In addition, he holds the school record for Career Wins with 20. As a senior, Suvak led the Blue Devils conference, district and regional championships as well as an appearance in the state Final Four. Suvak went on to play baseball for four years at Case Western Reserve University.

Steve Hare is the Chagrin Valley Conference's Sports Information Director. He also created and publishes, an online publication dedicated to providing hyperlocal coverage to area high school athletic programs. Hare began covering high school sports for the Lake County News Herald in 1997. Hare attended Willoughby South High School through the middle of his senior year, then graduated from Berkshire High School in Burton in 1986. He played football, wrestled and was an all-Geauga county baseball player (1986). He lives in Chardon with his wife Paulette and their children.
