Perry sweeps Edgewood in sectional semifinal

No. 9 Perry opened the postseason with an upset of No. 8 Edgewood in a Division II sectional semifinal at Jefferson on Tuesday.

The Pirates won the match 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 and will play top-seeded Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

“Going into the playoffs, we told the girls this is where the fun begins,” said Perry coach Brooke Mako. “It is up to them to work together as a team in order to move forward and that is exactly what we did. I think taking care of business in three games set the trajectory for Thursday’s match.”

Perry’s success started in the middle where setters Maddie Tharp and Emily Chaplin combined for 38 assists and middle hitters Sydney Moon and Mandy Schultz recorded 17 kills.

“Our setters and middles had a great match connecting,” Mako said.

The Pirates hope to ride that momentum to another upset in Thursday’s sectional final.

“We have a tough match ahead of us facing NDCL, but we are heading into it with a focus of being mentally disciplined and pursuing every ball,” Mako said. “If we all do our jobs and have team chemistry we should nice competitive match.”
