Red Raiders optimistic heading into new season

Harvey returns four starters from the team that won 12 matches last fall. That has the Red Raiders optimistic heading into the 2018 season.

“We have the potential to equal last year’s win total of 12, but we have to work on course management and consistency when it comes to ball striking and putting,” said 15th year head coach Scott Cummings. “We can be very good if we put our mind to it.”

The Red Raiders will focus on remaining consistent through each round and continue to work on striking the ball and putting.

They hope that work, coupled with the advantage they have playing on the back nine at Painesville Country Club, will help them reach their goals this fall.

“We always look forward to hosting team on the tough back nine at Painesville Country Club,” Cummings said. “We feel that those holes give us an advantage to unsuspecting visiting teams.”

Sophomore Connor Hedrick returns as the top golfer for the Red Raiders after averaging 45 strokes per nine holes last season.

“Looking for big things out of Connor, who spent his summer playing on the (North Coast Junior Tour) and getting lessons,” Cummings said. “His ball striking has improved immensely and I am looking for him to be the clear cut leader of the team by the end of the season. How far he advances depends on his course management skills throughout the season.”

Junior Braden Fisher and sophomore Avery Anderson both averaged a 48 last fall.

“Braden can be a very good player when his commits himself to the shot. He has the potential to be a very good golfer once he understands the keys that we are trying to impart to him on a daily basis,” Cummings said. “Avery is another very good ball striker that can play all of the shots necessary to be successful in high school golf. Now, he needs to improve on his course management skills to continue to take his game to the next level.”

Senior Dyllan Tuckey and junior Justin Gliha round out the projected top five.

Tuckey averaged 47 strokes per nine holes while Gliha is in position to see his first varsity action.

“Dyllan is an excellent athlete and golfer when he is consistent. He can hit the ball very far and is a good putter. We expect good things from Dyllan this year. He has the potential to do well at sectionals,” Cummings said. “We are looking for Justin to make the big step up to the varsity this year. He thinks his way around the golf course and can hit the ball well. Again, his consistency and improvement on ball striking and putting will help him solidify the fifth position this year.”
