Redskins, Blue Devils finish among top three at sectional tournament

Cuyahoga Heights and Independence both had nine wrestlers finish among the top four at the Division III sectional wrestling tournament on Saturday.

With their strong finishes, the Redskins finished in second place behind sectional champion Mogadore while Independence finished third.

“I was extremely proud of our team’s performance,” Cuyahoga Heights coach Dave Meade said. “We stressed all week that in order to win a sectional championship all 12 kids needed to place. We had 11 out of 12 kids place and came up just a little short. It’s a tough sectional and extremely hard to get nine kids out, but the kids showed up to wrestle. We also got one alternate that hopefully gets in next week.”

Nolan Frye (106), Dustin Kattler (113), and Joe Connors (195) all won individual sectional championships for the Redskins in their respective weight classes while Brandon Meade (120), Luke Hopkins (132), and Nathan Glinka (182) each finished second.

Luke Torgerson (145) and Dominic Trusso (160) finished third and Isiah Durant (285) placed fourth to also punch their tickets to next weekend’s Garfield Heights district tournament. Max Alpert placed fifth at 170 and will be an alternate at districts.

“We stayed aggressive all day and never gave up, coming back in numerous matches to get through to next week,” Coach Meade said. “Mogadore has a nice young team and I look forward to future battles with them.”

Independence’s Nick Rossi (160) and Braden Sears (285) won sectional titles.

“Braden Sears taking first was a little bit of a surprise,” Independence coach Ken DeAngelis said. “I knew he could win but he’s a very small heavyweight.”

Michael Kucera (126) and Jimmy Senick (145) finished second while Collin Patton (113) and Luke Clymer (220) were third. Jack Valenti (106), Liam Walker (138), and Seth Patterson (170) also advanced to districts by placing fourth.

“We wrestled really well today,” DeAngelis said. “We matched last year’s total of nine to districts and we won 5-of-6 consolation semifinals matches. It was a good round.”
