Three Blue Devils earn all-league honors

BURTON—Three Independence runners earned all-conference honors with strong finishes at the 2017 Chagrin Valley Conference Cross Country Meet at the Kent State University Geauga County Campus on Saturday.

Freshman Makenna McGhee and sophomore Emily Skoczen both earned first team honors while freshman P.J. Oschmann was named to the second team.

McGhee finished sixth in the Valley Division with a time of 20:23.

“Making first team all-conference was a good start to the postseason as the Valley Division has many strong runners,” McGhee said. “That level of competition will help us prepare for districts.”

Skoczen was seventh with a personal record time of 20:36.

“I’m really proud of earning first team, which was a step up from last year when I got second team,” Skoczen said. “Plus, it’s my dad’s birthday today so it was special to earn that today. Running my PR really helped my confidence and I hope I can drop another one at districts.”

Oschmann finished 15th in the boys’ race with a time of 18:49.

Sophomore Isabell McGreevy (23:39) and juniors Erica Esper (24:02) and Emma Wensink (26:05) also ran for the Blue Devils in the girls’ race and freshman Collin Patton (20:06) and sophomores Thorin Chappel (22:40) and Gregory Adams (24:53) competed in the boys’ race.

The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday when they travel to Boardman High School for the Division III District Meet.
