West Geauga holds off Orange

West Geauga and Orange clashed in a Chagrin Valley Conference showdown on Tuesday. The Wolverines scored an early goal and added another in the second half then held off the Lions to win, 2-1.

“It was a hard fought battle for 80 minutes and ended in a blue-collar victory for the Wolverines when the final whistle blew,” said West Geauga coach Mario Gerhardt.

Nick D’Alessandro gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when he finished off a cross from Mo Aidja, who scored West Geauga’s second goal in the 50th minute. Aidja took a serve from freshman midfielder Joey DiLalla and chipped it over the Orange keeper’s head for the 2-0 lead.

Orange cut its deficit in half when Jake Tartaglia found the net in the 71st minute but the Wolverines prevented the Lions from scoring the equalizer.

“Both keepers, Sam Onderdonk from West Geauga and Adam Rosenthal (from Orange) played an outstanding game,” Gerhardt said.

Onderdonk recorded five saves while Rosenthal stopped seven shots.

West Geauga improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CVC. Orange dropped to 0-2, 0-1.
