Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, Hawken win sectional titles

Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, and Hawken each won sectional titles on Wednesday and two other Chagrin Valley Conference teams remain in the hunt after their championship games were suspended due to rain.

The Bison, who improved to 14-10, knocked off Wooster Triway, 7-2, to advance to the North Ridgeville District semifinals on May 23. No. 14 Beachwood will play No. 8 Norton.

On Wednesday, Beachwood scored two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings and then added another in the sixth before Triway finished the game with a two-run seventh.

Brett Zawatsky earned the pitching victory after allowing six hits and striking out three in 5 2/3 scoreless innings of work. Brenden Malek finished off the game. He allowed two unearned runs on one hit and he struck out one.

The top of Beachwood’s order combined to go 6-for-12 with a double, three runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Luke Bennett was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Vincent Crenshaw was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Malek was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Zawatsky and Jaycob Zabell also had hits for the Bison.

Fifth-seeded Chagrin Falls had little trouble with Akron Coventry. The Tigers won 8-0 and will play the winner of the sectional final between No. 7 St. Vincent-St. Mary and No. 13 Revere, which was suspended due to rain.

Leo Fornara threw a no-hitter for the Tigers. He allowed just one walk and struck out 13 batters.

Fornara now is the school’s all-time leader with 96 strikeouts in a single season. He beat the previous mark of 94 set by Bob Shutts in 1963.

Brett Vaccaro led the Tigers at the plate as he finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Donny Hardy doubled and knocked in two runs and Andrew Kirkpatrick and Nick Calabrese both hit doubles. Drew Mergenhagen finished the game 1-for-1 with two runs scored, a walk, and a hit by pitch.

No. 4 Hawken clubbed Northwestern in five innings, 12-2.

Devin Anthony allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out four in a five-inning complete-game victory.

Dom Brancel was 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI ad Tommy Clark and Jalen Suggs both had two hits and three RBI.

The Hawks will play the winner of the game between No. 6 Villa Angela-St. Joseph and No. 11 Canton Central Catholic on March 23 at Copley.

Cardinal and LaBrae were locked in a 1-1 tie when that game was suspended in the top of the third inning. That game will resume on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to play Youngstown Ursuline in the Struthers district semifinals.

Jake Bean has allowed one unearned run on one hit and has struck out four in two innings.

LaBrae scored in the top of the first on a single and then a two-base throwing error. The Huskies tied it in the bottom of the second when Logan Strever walked and scored on Austin Shank’s RBI single.

Trinity was trailing Elyria Catholic 9-3 when that Division III sectional final was suspended due to inclement weather. Upon completion, the winner will face the winner of the game between Black River and Wellington on March 23 at Copley.

The Trojans trailed 4-0 when they scored three runs in the top of the fourth but the Panthers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and three in the fifth.
